If you needed to get a new dry suit what brand /model would you get?
Any thoughts of a semi-dry vrs. dry suit?
Thanks,
Jon

Just used my new Supernova Kokatat semi-dry suit this past weekend (Delmarva Greenland Retreat) while practicing rolling, etc. So under water dozens of times. The semi-dry has a thin neoprene collar which is a rolled over a thin adjusting elastic string. Mine is a medium suit and the collar fits nicely, not too tight for a long day, but snug. I found that I got maybe a 1/2 cup of water over the practicing, probably because you are always twisting your neck. That is not a bad trade off for a durable neck closure. In the real world being dumped, you are not going to be upside down and will be floating neck up before your being rescued by someone in the paddle group. So I don't expect a little water will be a problem.
https://www.kayakcentre.com/supernova-an...ydrus.html I also have the newer Reed "Paddle suit" which is sort of "semi dry" because the neck closure is the same material as the suit not a latex material. One strechable layer material (no roll over) which fits nicely and snug. No water got in the suit on the second day of practice. (First day was with the Kokatat suit.) On the good or bad side, my paddling partner has a thin neck and her Reed collar is "loosely snug", and some water got in during extended sculling, rolling attemps. More than would be comfortable except for a quick dump and recover. Because of the material, I plan on cutting out a thin wedge, and re sewing and sealing the neck collar to fit. Not a problem if you can handle a sewing machine. https://www.chillcheater.com/products/aq...addle-suit

I had a reed suit for a while and it worked great, but when I needed to replace it the exchange rate wasn't so good and the shipping costs were unfavorable.....

Peak UK is a very good option. For me their leg entry system is the most comfortable and easy to get in and out. No zipper on your back or chest where it is always poking you one way or another; the leg zipper just becomes unnoticeable. And it doubles as a relief zipper. Their neoprene neck with adjustable elastic strap is an excellent compromise between water tightness and comfort; it's not restrictive (constrictive?) like a rubber gasket, yet keeps the water out under the majority of situations one would find oneself in (except perhaps diving, but that seems out of our intended range of activities.) On the wrist it has standard rubber gaskets, and the boots/socks are integrated. The suit materials are top notch, as is the construction and design features. I got their Explorer One Piece model three years ago and I find it superior to Kokatat. You can get Peak UK from our own Greg Paquin / Kayak Waveology.

Never seen that brand before so looked at a few videos on the entry system. Nice concept. Peak UK 2013 Explorer/Creek Suit demo

I ended up with Kokatat's Super nova semi-dry Hydrus 3.0. It's on sale now for $560. ( if you like green )
It’s very comfortable and as Mike says it leaks just a bit around the neck but it’s lighter and flexible and more comfortable than my older Meridian. It’s great to be in a dryer "dry suit ". |
