Hi Tony - the graphical hourly weather forecast on any point forecast page shows actual predicted wind speeds.
www.weather.gov will give you a national weather map. Clicking anywhere on the map will take you to the regional forecast map, e.g. Boston Region
https://www.weather.gov/box/
Clicking on the regional map will take you to the point forecast, e.g. here is a link to the point forecast for Lower Narragansett Bay:

The Hourly Weather Graph is a ways down the point forecast page, underneath the Radar and Satellite Images. Clicking on the graph will take you to the full graph:

In the meantime, I will make the most minor changes possible:
Level 3, remove “to 20knt
Level 4, add “and current”
Hi Brenda,
I feel there is still relevance to distance in the trip levels. As I look at the postings for sea kayak trips I find that I meet the standards for many L3 trips. However, a chronic hand injury excludes my logging 13 miles in a single trip, although in better years I have done 20. The distance gap between L2 and L3 is really out of hand as it currently exists. A six mile trip seems too short to me. I can handle 8 without much problem but more than 10 will start to get difficult.
So although wind and sea state as well as exposure of the coastal geography are very important, distance still has relevance too when I consider whether I should paddle a RICKA sea trip or not. I don't think it should be thrown out.

Hello Ric,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on trip levels. We don’t intend to throw out the distance part of the trip levels. We can adjust level 3 down from 13 to 12. You might be interested in joining a rock gardening level 3 trip, since these often go less distance. Also, if you see a L3 trip of interest, you can reach out to the trip leader to see what the plan is, and what distance the trip is likely to be. Thanks, Brenda

One thought is that we could split level 3 into two. One for longer paddles in level 2 conditions (3D) and one for shorter paddles in level 3 conditions(3C).
This might give coordinators more flexibility in planning say a longer trip in the upper bay, while also allowing for short more open water paddles in the lower bay.
I guess using + and - on level 2 and level 3 trips could also be an option to denote extra/reduced distance.

Thanks for sharing these ideas. The way the trip levels are written, distance refers to the paddlers ability, not to a trip length. We can encourage coordinators to post expected distance if they have that in mind ahead of time.

Last year we modified trip levels to some extent. Now that this season is underway, could we revisit Level 2? It still tops out at 6 miles (too short) and has no maximum windspeed, which it really should for folks interested in milder paddles.
