Apparently he tried crossing to Barrington from Conimicut Point at 5 p.m. wearing heavy clothes ( no dry suit ) .

This is sad, and could have been prevented with some knowledge. That day was quite windy, and the currents could have been very strong depending on when in the tide cycle he crossed over from Conimicut to Barrington (it was near full moon). Added to this, he apparently was wearing street clothes, and was alone (I know, I do a lot of solo trips, but only under certain conditions, and usually in waist-deep water). Unfortunately, as the weather starts to warm up, we will see more and more people out there with the wrong clothing, and little if any knowledge / skills.
