Racing Scow Sailboats - Cat.Radcliffe - 05-19-2022

On the May 14th trip, I got into a discussion with Mike Hazeltine (I think) about sailboat design.  I mentioned sailing scows, which are popular one-design racers in the midwest, and he wasn't familiar with them.

They are a flat-bottomed sailboat with dual centerboards, kind of a displacement/planing hybrid.  They've been described variously as looking like catfish, whale sharks or surfboards.  When I was moving from Oregon to Massachusetts I got recruited to crew on one on Canyon Ferry Lake in Helena, Montana, and boy are they fast.

I thought folks might find this interesting so I looked them up and here is a Wikipedia link:

Cheers,
