Yes.... (as a monday morning quarterback), If the guy goes into the rock/ surf zone it would be beneficial to have a roll or have friends nearby to assist with rescues. Also if he held on to his boat ( deck lines ) the boat would have protected him from the rocks and provided buoyancy which is helpful in rough waters.
