" Support You Local Area Symposium"

Dear paddlers,

The challenge is coming!  It is that time of year again when the swell is growing and the winds are building.  Making our little area of the sea, Fishers Island Sound an active and wild place.  Fishers Island Sound is known for its tide flows and is Home to Kayak Waveology’s major annual event.  As we have made the turn around labor day and start the journey into fall / winter, we have the 10th year of the famed Autumn Gales rough water paddlers training event on the horizon.  The is year the Gales is back around its original time frame November 2- 4th, 2018.  As some previous years the weather was just too warm and kind.  Check out this web site link for event details :  http://www.autumngales.com/

A lot of confirmed  great British and International coaches are coming over again, along with some  North American local greats from the Kayak Waveology team of coaches and rough water guides.  Names like Eila Wilkinson a top UK female coach, Peter Jones one of my early BCU coaches who set me straight, Harry Whelan known for his crazy surfing antics, Axel Schoevers the Netherlands top BC Coach, Rick Cooper from Cornwall with all hands and legs on deck with this guy, Calvin Croll from BBB calm and collective budding BC coach, Steven Henkind, a master navigation instructor for the USCG, last but not least the Manx wild cat Keirron Tastagh one of the UK/IOM top coaches.  Have a read through the coaches bios on the Coaches page link: http://www.autumngales.com/coaches--guides.html

How the Autumn Gales format works, and it has worked this way since it’s commencement 10 years ago.  Each morning we run a Weather/ Sea State briefing with all the coaches and participants.  Figuring out where to go, what to work on, and what “you” want.  Groups then divide up with the coaches and local rough water guides to deliver that great rough water learning experience for you.  We can deliver this range of courses depending on what ever mother nature dishes out.  Course link: http://www.autumngales.com/courses---main-event.html
After the Autumn Gales proper we will offering some British Canoeing Performance, Leadership trainings and assessments.  See this link for BC courses: http://www.autumngales.com/courses---british-canoeing.html

Registration via this link: http://www.autumngales.com/registrationcontact-info.html

Additionally, evening happenings are also another fun thing while your staying in and around Stonington Bourgh for the Gales.  Friday evening after a great day on the water we all head to the Holy Ghost Portuguese Club for the community fish fry, then down stairs into the private pub.  This year as a celebration of our paddling event running for ten years, we will have a great local band playing from 8PM on.  The Dizzy River Band certainly will rock you and loosen you up for the next few days of the Gales.  Saturday evening will be a little more relaxing, where we will have some informational after dinner talks and a presentation of a Vancouver Island Winter Solo Paddling Expedition.

Lastly, all this happens in Fishers island Sound running out of Stonington Bourgh Ct.  We use the New England Science and Sailing (NESS) Center as our home base.  NESS is located at 72 Water Street, Stonington Ct.  There are lots of creative lodging options around.  Air B&B’s, off season house rentals for friendly paddler groups to bunk together, area B&B’s and Motel/ Hotels.  Lodging link: http://www.autumngales.com/locationlodging.html

So we do hope to see many of you again  for this  10th gathering of like minded rough water paddlers and those who want to grow and learn more.

See you on the next wave.

Cheers
Greg and Paula

Dear paddlers,

As the weather is starting to become more Gales like, as weathers system cycle in in every 3-4 days.  Good chance we will see some.  We were out in tropical storm Michael, as he cruised through working his force 5-6 winds.  Just a self-check making sure our strengths, mentally and physically were still in tuned.

We have some updates and minor program shift changes to let you all know about.  During the Gales proper we will be adding the British Canoeing’s 1st safety course in the coaching track, it’s called FS&RT Foundation Safety and Rescue Training.  Along with a Professional VHF and GPS course (see attached), as we all should really be finely tuned in there uses, value, and importance in what we do on the waters any where in the world.  These two programs either will run on a low weather day or on the last day Sunday as you wind down.

On the British Canoeing week we are sliding the BC Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Training (5 star) to Monday and Tuesday from its original position of Tuesday- Wednesday.  There are still some openings for the Sea Kayak Leader Training and Assessment (4 Star).  The BC leadership skills track really sets your mind straight weather your guiding for real or even just out with your buddies.  It’s a safety thing your know, as we all need to come home at night.  .  See this link for BC courses: http://www.autumngales.com/courses---british-canoeing.html
