Accessing topics

Is there a reason why we now have to sign in each time we want to view a topic?  :-[

I notice that some viewers are "guests." Does that mean they can view topics without logging in? Or does it have something to do with which operating system or web browser settings one uses or not? Eric? Tony? Someone?

I'm still waiting for an answer to the "403 Denied" guest access problem to the Sea Kayaking message board topics. FWIW, I have no problem viewing the FW and WW message boards, so the problem seems to be solely with this forum.

Hi Fred,
I can't really answer your question...it is only very rarely that I have to log in...maybe my home computer and all the computers at my work know and remember my user name / password.

Thanks, Tony, for getting back to me. This phenomenon only began recently, so I wondered if Eric or you might have changed the site's access, log-in, or firewall settings. I've never had the problem before, so it's puzzling. My guess is that most of you (other than Mike Krabach and I) access the site via PCs, tablets, or cell phones running Windows OS, Mac OS, iOS, or Android.

Perhaps my Linux security settings could be part of the problem. If there are other Linux users who participate in this forum, I'd like to hear if they are experiencing the same problem. Meanwhile, I guess I'll have to continue logging in to view posts here.  :-\

Well, I know that I didn't change any access settings, don't even know how to, even though I have the title "global moderator". (As global moderator, I eliminate inappropriate posts (spam, pornography, etc.), and inactivate the accounts of those who make such posts.). I'm sure Eric J. could be much more helpful in figuring out your problem.

I think I may have discovered why I can't access this forum without logging in. As a Linux user, I use several security tools, whether I'm using e-mail or one of three browsers. Firefox, for example, tells me that the site is not secure and even logging in might not be secure, but when I check for possible tracking and third party sources, I don't find anything. I'll change the filter settings for this site and see what happens. That did the trick, but when I log in, I still see the message that the site might be compromised.

Hi Tony, in brief, the urlscan data provides info about the servers you connect to for the sea kayak forum web page. You're accessing three servers in the U.S. and one in Europe. Whenever I try to access the forum, I receive a message telling me that the site is insecure. To access it, I had to disable my AdBlock Plus and Privacy Badger settings for the site. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to determine exactly why this site is insecure unless one of the servers has been compromised, i.e. hacked.  ???

Fred,

The data you posted was for the main RIC/KA site not the sea kayaking site which uses an entirely different URL. The url scan data for the actual forum URL is different from that you posted.

It is not a secure site because it does not use HTTPS and does not have a certificate to offer for validation, as such it sends all of its information as plain text and not encrypted information. That said, it is not overly insecure as long as you are not posting sensitive personal information.

Cheers,
Eric

Thank you for the info, Eric. I didn't understand why I could view posts without logging in one week and couldn't the next. I've been using the same add-ons and security settings for my browsers for a very long time, and wondered if something had changed.

I've been having the same problem.  It seemed to start last fall around the time the sea kayak website was up for renewal.

The only way I can sign in or even read topics is if I disable the Firefox security function that protects from dangerous websites or downloads.  This is a global setting, so I have to change it back when I'm done with the message board.  We shouldn't have to do this.

What changed?  What will it take to fix this?  If we have to pay more for a secure website, let's take it to the board and get it approved.
