West Island Trip Rescheduled to Sunday Aug 4
« on: August 03, 2013, 07:42:35 AM »

Because there are a lot of Level 2 paddlers interested in the West Island trip, I am postponing it until tomorrow, August 4th.  Today's marine forecast for West Island is for 11-15-knot winds, which is a solid Level 3.

The length of the trip will depend on the group. It's a nice trip along the east side of the island, and there's a nice beach on the far SE end where we can have lunch and then decide if we want to go around or retrace our steps (er, strokes). The west side of the island is much more exposed to wind.

Trip distances: out & back about 7.8 miles, around the island about 9.2 miles.

By the way, http://www.walkjogrun.net/ is the website I use to calculate trip distance.

Update:  Kate and I show up today for the paddle and it just trip leader Cat Ratcliff and the two of us!!  Thinking 4 hour private lesson, in the water we go!  Easy stuff part way around west island, lunch on the beach, then Cat says " wanna paddle to that white rock?" So off we go heading towards some white rock island thing across the boat channel south west of west island.  TWO MILES later we finally get there,4-5 people on the beach, we land to "stretch"....and find that one of the people on the beach OWNS Angelica Island! Nice guy, some of you might be lucky enough to land there on a future ricka trip since he said no worries.

Of course, as we are contemplating paddling back through the swells and then turning in towards the causeway, we see the people who WALKED to the island WALKING the half mile or so back waist deep (low tide) along this huge sandbar(unfortunately, following them in would have put us on the wrong side of the land mass that our cars were parked on!

Anyway, easy trip back into the causeway, and then 8-10 knot wind in the face for the next couple of miles back in.  excellent call by Cat canceling yesterday given the wind, sorry more couldn't make it today, but WE had a GREAT time!  Thanks Cat!  Ron and Kate
